It is now possible to jailbreak iPhone 3GS, install it with iPad baseband 6.15.00 and unlock with ultrasn0w 1.2.
There are 3 main steps in this process:
1. Update your iPhone to 4.3.1 via iTunes, assuming you have not accidentally updated to iOS 4.3.1 yet. If you have an older baseband 5.13.04 or below, do not update it directly as you will lose a valuable baseband that can be unlocked with ultrasn0w!
2. Jailbreak your iPhone using redsn0w 0.9.6rc9 and at the same time update the baseband to 6.15.00 (iPad’s baseband). (download redsnow 0.9.6rc9 here for Windows or Mac).
3. Unlock for any carrier using the ultrasn0w 1.2. (Note: iPhone Dev Team skipped the unlock for 5.14.02, 5.15.04 and 5.16.02 but managed to unlock iPad’s baseband 6.15.00 which is compatible with 3G and 3GS)
WARNING: Please do not proceed if you are unsure what to do. We will not be responsible for any damage caused to your iPhone.
More Warnings:
1. There is no way to downgrade your baseband if you are already on 6.15.00. There are also risks associated with this baseband.
2. Starting from iOS 4.2.1 and if you have a baseband 6.15.00, you will NOT be able to restore using the original firmware. You can only do it via a custom firmware created with sn0wbreeze or other tools. You will get error 3004 on iTunes.
3. @musclenerd warns of unstable ultrasn0w after the unlock showing one bar signal despite the strength. Please wait if you can.
Steps:
1. Download iOS 4.3.1 for iPhone 3GS iPhone2,1_4.3.1_8G4_Restore.ipsw and make sure you have the latest version of iTunes (Windows iTunes_10.2.1_Win.exe or Mac iTunes10.2.1.dmg).
2. Update to iOS 4.3.1 firmware using the IPSW file you just downloaded (Windows: Shift+Restore; Mac: Option+Restore)
3. Launch Redsn0w 0.9.6rc9 and select the iOS 4.3.1 firmware to start the jailbreak.
4. Select “Install Cydia” & “Install iPad baseband” options and then click “Next” to continue. Redsn0w will now download the hacked 06.15.00 baseband from iPad’s 3.2.2 firmware and will replace baseband 5.16.02.
5. Switch off your device and make sure it is plugged in to the computer before you click “Next”.

6: Redsn0w will jailbreak your iPhone and once done, it will restart automatically and you will find it jailbroken state (you will find Cydia) on iOS 4.3.1 firmware, with the unlockable 06.15.00 baseband.
7. Last step – unlock using ultrasn0w 1.2:
- Launch Cydia from Springboard (home menu)
- Search for ultrasn0w on Packages in Cydia. If you cannot find it, add new sources by typing ultrasn0w repo: repo666.ultrasn0w.com (with zero, not o)
- Install Ultrasnow
- Reboot your iPhone

Has anyone got the unlock w/ Cydia to work?
I cannot make a call phone after following all step above (redsn0w with the selection of “Install Cydia” & “Install iPad baseband” options,and then using ultrasn0w 1.2 to unlock my Iphone(3GS) and reboot). Did they not work well?

doesn't work for me either. tried both the Mac and Pc version and redsn0w crashed everytime.

your IPSW could be corrupted, re-download the file
iPhone 3GS jailbroken with redsn0w 0.9.6rc9, I unless tried to unlock with ultrasn0w but when I put my T-Mobile SIM it does not work, I get SIM failure. Followed the directions to the letter. Anything I missed? The iPhone is an AT&T out of contract 3GS.

Does anybody know wen a unlock for the 5.16 baseband will be out? Got my 3gs locked on this. Redsnow works great, but the baseband locks out the sim work.
Wen i try with the program install the ipad baseband, it stops the program and shuts down. please people, this grab from apple just f-cks up everybody.

I'm using a iPhone 3GS on firmware 4.3.1 baseband 5.16.02 and everytime I run redsn0w to change the baseband to an iPad baseband I get an error. Is there a known problem with doing this or is it a try it until it works situation? I appreciate any help on this matter.
are you using Windows? what is the error message?
Windows 7 or Vista: right click on the program, select run as administrator
Windows XP:
1. Right click on redsn0w.exe, click Properties.
2. Click Compatibility tab.
3. In Compatibility mode – check “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” option – choose Windows XP in drop-down menu.
4. Also check “Run this program as an administrator” option in Privilege Level.
5. Click OK and run the redsn0w.exe again.

and now my Phone is unlocked.. i can use every Mobile Card…
to the Single Bar..
sometime i have a Single Bar sometimes a Full…. BUT i would say thats normal for I Phone.. because my brother have the I Phone 4.. and we have exactly the same Single Bar at the same time.. maybe its the Provider..
even if i have a single bar sometimes.. my connection is also great and i can call without any problem..

Ive spent 3 hours wasting time on this and NOTHING works. Ive got an iphone 3gs and even after downloading the appropriate programs, nothing launches. Im going to take my iphone to some dodgy guy in a store who will do it for me as the instructions are USELESS and frustrating. What a waste of time and money.

Iphone 3GS running iOS 4.3.3 jailbroken using redsn0w untethered. BB version 5.16.02. So the only way I can get this phone to work for T-Mobile is to upgrade BB version to 6.15? Any updates to when an unlock for 5.16.02 COULD come?
